Level 4 Introduction to Wind Energy

Climate changes observed throughout the world in recent years have led to an ever-growing

demand for renewable sources of energy to counteract these changes and help minimise their negative effects on our lives. Wind power is one of the most important sources of renewable energy available on Earth. In certain countries, electricity produced from wind power fulfils a significant part of the total current energy demand.

This course, Wind Power Systems, explains how a wind turbine produces electricity from wind power, as well as how to store this electric energy in batteries to ensure electrical power is available when there is no wind or during low wind periods. The course first covers the construction and operation of small-scale wind turbines, presenting typical curves of a wind turbine: the speed, torque, and mechanical power curves at the wind turbine rotor, and the corresponding voltage, current, and electrical power curves of the wind turbine generator. Students will learn how to maximise the electrical energy produced over a range of wind speeds and store this energy in batteries. Finally, the course introduces students to automatic tracking of the maximum power point (MPP), as well as protection against battery overcharging and wind turbine over-speeding.

The programme is suitable for technician/operation staff with level 3/4/5 qualifications (or

equivalent industry experience) and apprentices who need retraining as wind power systems technicians. Programme learning outcomes are:

  • Introduction to wind power systems and their components.
  • Understanding the configuration and operation of stand-alone wind power systems.
  • Planning, developing, and building wind power systems.
  • Technical documentation related to wind power system design and implementation.
  • Integration and operation of wind turbines, charge controllers, batteries, and inverters.
  • Assessing the impact of energy-efficient equipment on wind power system size and cost.
  • Ensuring compatibility and proper operation of wind power system components.
  • Familiarity with the typical applications of stand-alone wind power systems.
  • Ability to check and interpret electrical specifications of wind power components.
  • Knowledge of troubleshooting and maintenance practices for wind power systems.

The Wind Power Systems CPD programme has a predominantly practical focus for many of the learning outcomes with an integrated learning approach of lectures and a workshop-based tutorial to develop attendees’ understanding of theoretical concepts with a hands-on learning experience.

Attendees will have access to the University Campus North Lincolnshire’s (UCNL) purpose-built renewable energy laboratories to undertake the wind power systems practical sessions.

The Wind Power Systems CPD programme explores the essential engineering concepts behind contemporary wind power practices, concentrating on wind power systems. Participants gain hands-on experience in our advanced laboratories, learning about both stand-alone wind power systems. The curriculum covers the integration of essential components such as wind turbines, charge controllers, batteries, and inverters, with particular emphasis on the impact of energy-efficient equipment on system size and cost.

This course aims to provide a supportive and interactive learning environment, progressively equipping participants with the skills to analyse, comprehend, and manage wind power systems. By the end of the programme, attendees will be familiar with the configuration, operation, and typical applications of stand-alone wind power systems. They will understand the roles of the main components and ensure their compatibility, preparing them to effectively design and manage renewable energy systems.
