HNC Construction and Engineering students given Shoestring Project insight

Posted: 12 February 2026

Offering students a platform to embed low-cost digitalisation solutions in the workplace, the Shoestring Project helps build digital confidence and skills, while preparing individuals to embrace further digital technologies.

Learners from The University Campus North Lincolnshire were recently provided an opportunity to discover more about the project, thanks to a visit from Dr German Terrazas Angulo, a Research Associate from the University of Cambridge.

Delivering a collaborative session, he engaged with students, sharing previous Shoestring success stories, and revealing just how the initiative could be interweaved into respective work settings.

Besides the above, Dr German Terrazas Angulo also spent time in our Lincolnshire Institute of Technology laboratories, while embarking on a tour of the campus too.

Dr German Terrazas Angulo, Research Associate, University of Cambridge, said: “I am very pleased to have visited UCNL. The location, facilities and staff offer a great opportunity for learners to upskill in practical ways.

“The cohort I met have both the engineering expertise and potential to identify digitalisation needs in the companies they work for. I look forward to seeing low-cost industrial digitalisation activities make real impact in businesses and contribute to the apprentice’s journey.”

Hamidreza Jafarnejad, Curriculum Leader: HE Engineering & Institute of Technology | DN Colleges Group, commented: “It was a real privilege to welcome Dr German Terrazas Angulo from the University of Cambridge to speak with our HNC Engineering students about the Shoestring Project.

“The session was engaging, relevant and genuinely inspiring, and the student response was excellent. This is a brilliant opportunity for our students to work with Dr Terrazas Angulo and his team at University of Cambridge on an exciting industrial engineering project.”

Anne-Marie Trenholme, Programme Leader, HE Engineering, DN Colleges Group, added: “The Shoestring Project event has given our students new ideas to think about and an opportunity to implement their learning in the workplace.

“We look forward to working with the team at the University of Cambridge on this exciting initiative.”
