The purpose of this qualification is to develop students as professional, self-reflecting individuals able to meet the demands of employers in the engineering sector and to adapt to a constantly changing world. The qualification aims to widen access to higher education and enhance the career prospects of those who undertake it.
The objectives of these qualifications are to:
- Equip students with the skills, knowledge and understanding they need to achieve high performance in the engineering and manufacturing environment
- Develop students with enquiring minds, who have the abilities and confidence to work across different engineering functions and to lead, manage, respond to change and tackle a range of complex engineering situations
- Provide the core skills required for a range of careers in engineering offer a balance between employability skills and the knowledge essential for students with entrepreneurial, employment or academic ambitions
- Develop students’ understanding of the major impact that new digital and software technologies have on the engineering environment
- Provide insight to engineering operations and the opportunities and challenges presented by a global marketplace
- Equip students with knowledge and understanding of culturally diverse organisations, cross-cultural issues, diversity and values
- Allow flexible study to meet local and specialist needs.
The Level 5 units prepare students to move on to specific areas of engineering at Level 6 or to enter employment with the qualities and abilities necessary for roles that require personal responsibility and decision making.
Students will be able to develop and apply their own ideas to their studies, to deal with uncertainty and complexity, to explore solutions, demonstrate critical evaluation and use both theory and practice in a wide range of engineering situations. By the end of Level 5 study, students will have a sound understanding of the principles in their area of specialist study and will know how to apply those principles more widely in the industry. They will be able to perform effectively in their specialist area.

This course is comprised of the following core, level 5 units that all students complete. Each unit has a 15-credit value:
- Unit 5002: Professional Engineering Management
- Unit 5006: Further Mathematics
- Unit 5007: Commercial Programming Software
- Unit 5008: Distributed Control Systems
- Unit 5010: Further Electrical Machines and Drives
- Unit 5013: Embedded Systems
- Unit 5014: Analogue Electronic Systems
- Unit 5021: Further Control Systems Engineering

All Higher Technical Qualifications (HTQs) have a practical focus in delivery that compliments the theoretical underpinnings of Engineering study. Students can expect to experience a timetabled schedule of theory-led lectures/seminars alongside practical, assessment and employability workshops that prepare them for industry. All students also receive timetabled tutorial support alongside the formal curriculum.
Assessment methods are varied to ensure holistic assessment is achieved in Higher Technical Qualifications. These can include:

Successful and satisfactory completion of Level 4 HNC Engineering for Engineering (HTQ/RQF standards).
Each application will be reviewed on an individual basis with appropriate advice and guidance provided.
The Pearson BTEC Level 5 Higher National Diploma (HTQ) allows students to specialise by committing to specific career paths and progression routes to degree-level study (level 6 onwards).
