UCNL is delighted to share that Rachel Summers, a second-year Assistant Practitioner Health and Social Care FdSc student, has won a Sheffield Hallam University Inspirational Student Award 2025, in the category of Inclusivity & Diversity.
The award, which recognises students who have made a real difference to their fellow students, staff, local community, and beyond, places a focus on the remarkable work Rachel has carried out while being a student with us.
She has consistently championed the importance of mental health awareness, providing both emotional support to fellow students and advocating for a culture of openness and self-care, while being a pillar of support for her peers, offering guidance, encouragement, and mentorship, ensuring that those around her feel valued and empowered.
Rachel’s courageous attitude extends to the decision she took when enrolling as a Health and Social Care student – which marked a complete career change at the time. Her journey into this sector only goes to highlight the deep-seated desire she has to contribute to the wellbeing of others.
Speaking about winning the award, Rachel said: “When I first heard about the award that the Health & Social Care team had nominated me for, I was surprised, shocked and very overwhelmed. Because, essentially, I have gone around campus and just continued to be me. I promote inclusivity and try to include everyone in everything that I do. If I see people are having a low moment, I will offer to have a chat.
“Hopefully other people will see that by being yourself, that in turn helps other people feel supported.”
Emma Kirk, Health and Social Care Programme Leader, (who nominated Rachel, along with fellow Programme Leader, Harry Marks) added: “Throughout her studies, Rachel has been a strong advocate for diversity and inclusion, inspiring her peers with her resilience, courage, and openness in sharing lived experiences.
“Her transparency about life’s challenges has made her a role model within the student community, motivating others with her positive outlook and determination. Passionate about pursuing a career in mental health services, Rachel is committed to making a difference—and we are proud to support her as she takes the next steps in her journey.
“It is this commitment and inspiration that led us to nominate Rachel for the Inspirational Student Award with Sheffield Hallam University — a well-deserved recognition of her achievements and the positive influence she has on those around her. A huge well done from the Health & Social Care team.”
Everyone at UCNL extends their congratulations to Rachel, on an amazing achievement!
