Last week, the University Campus North Lincolnshire (UCNL) brought members of the community, students and staff together, as it hosted its annual Fast-a-Thon and Community Iftar.
Evidencing the power of unity and compassion, large numbers fasted throughout the day, going hungry so that others wouldn’t have to, and generously donated their lunch money to Scunthorpe Foodbank. An amazing £280 was raised in the process, showcasing the collective desire to make a difference amongst the group.
This year, the event, (which also saw attendees observe prayer and enjoy a breaking of the fast dinner), embraced interfaith unity, by pairing with those of a Christian faith during Lent, highlighting the shared values of fasting, prayer, reflection and generosity between faiths.
The event was further enriched by the presence of the Community Police, the Mayor, and representatives from the NHS and North Lincolnshire Council.
Gillian Reid, Director School of Health, Education, Wellbeing and Sport at DN Colleges Group said: “Thank you for the support of everyone involved, especially the UCNL Interfaith Group. This initiative has grown stronger each year and we can’t wait to see the impact of next year’s celebration of solidarity and generosity.”
Imam Sayful Ahmed commented: “The interfaith Iftar at UCNL was a beautiful gathering of unity, understanding, and shared community, bringing people of all faiths & backgrounds together in the spirit of peace and togetherness during this blessed month of Ramadan.”
PC Manny Gul, Community Cohesion Officer at Humberside Police added: “A key part of my job role is to work closely with diverse communities and faith groups. This work is about increasing trust and mutual respect with the communities that we serve within Humberside Police area of service.
“I believe this is the third ‘Fast and The Curious’ event that I have attended. On personal professional level, in my opinion this is a fantastic event in terms of bringing faith groups together.”
On behalf of everyone at the University Campus North Lincolnshire, we would like to wish all who are observing, a blessed Ramadan.
