UCNL launches specialist degree in Understanding Domestic Violence and Sexual Abuse

Posted: 13 July 2026

University Campus North Lincolnshire (UCNL) is proud to announce the launch of its new Foundation Degree (FdA) in Understanding Domestic Violence and Sexual Abuse, commencing in September 2026. Developed and validated in partnership with Sheffield Hallam University, this innovative programme has been designed to address the growing need for skilled professionals working within the domestic violence and sexual abuse sector.

The degree provides students with a comprehensive understanding of the social, psychological, legal and policy issues surrounding domestic violence and sexual abuse. Through a combination of academic study and practical application, learners will develop the knowledge and skills needed to support individuals, families and communities affected by abuse, while exploring effective approaches to prevention, intervention and recovery.

Designed for both current practitioners and those aspiring to enter the sector, the programme is particularly relevant to professionals working in social care, criminal justice, healthcare, education, youth work, community services and specialist support organisations. Students can choose from three specialist pathways: Independent Sexual Violence Advisors (ISVAs), Independent Domestic Violence Advisors (IDVAs), and Children and Young People’s Support Workers.

To celebrate the launch of this unique qualification, UCNL is hosting a Course Launch and Information Event on 10 August 2026. Attendees will have the opportunity to meet the programme team, learn more about the curriculum, explore career opportunities within the sector, and discover how the course can support their professional development.

The Foundation Degree will be delivered at UCNL’s Scunthorpe campus, combining local accessibility with the academic excellence and quality assurance of Sheffield Hallam University.

Lisa Kmita, Curriculum Lead for Counselling and Mental Health at DN Colleges Group, said:

“We are delighted to introduce this pioneering Foundation Degree, which responds to a significant and growing area of social need. The programme has been developed in collaboration with sector professionals to ensure students gain the specialist knowledge, practical understanding and confidence required to make a meaningful difference in the lives of those affected by domestic violence and sexual abuse.

“We are proud to be among the first providers in the region to offer an undergraduate qualification dedicated to this vital area of practice.”
