More Flexible Routes to Higher Education as University Campus North Lincolnshire Secures Lifelong Learning Entitlement Approval

Posted: 22 May 2026

University Campus North Lincolnshire (UCNL) are proud to announce that it has been approved by the UK Government as one of the first 130 universities and colleges across England authorised to deliver modules through the new Lifelong Learning Entitlement (LLE) from January 2027.

The approval places UCNL among a select group of providers helping to shape a major transformation in how people access higher-level education and skills training in England. The Government confirmed the first 130 approved providers in May 2026, enabling learners to access flexible, modular study backed by student finance for the first time.

The Lifelong Learning Entitlement will give eligible adults access to funding equivalent to four years of post-18 study, currently worth up to £39,160. Rather than committing to a full qualification from the outset, learners will be able to study individual modules and build qualifications over time, making higher education more accessible for those balancing employment, family responsibilities and other commitments.

From January 2027, UCNL plan to offer digital and engineering modules under the Lifelong Learning Entitlement. These flexible learning opportunities will allow learners to build skills gradually, whether they are starting a new career, developing technical expertise or returning to education later in life.

For many people, this flexibility will make higher-level study far more accessible. It means individuals can gain valuable qualifications whilst continuing to work, support their families and progress their careers.

The introduction of the LLE is designed to remove barriers to higher education participation while supporting the skills needs of employers and regional economies. By enabling learners to study in smaller, more manageable stages, the initiative will provide greater flexibility and choice than ever before

For UCNL, the approval reinforces its commitment to widening participation, supporting lifelong learning and delivering education that responds to the needs of industry and local communities.

Daniel Bown, Vice Principal said “We are incredibly proud to be approved to deliver modular programmes funded through the Lifelong Learning Entitlement from January 2027. This is a transformative opportunity for our community, opening the door to higher education for people who may previously have felt it was out of reach. Flexible modular study allows learners to build skills and confidence in a way that fits around work, family and other commitments, whether they are looking to upskill, change career or achieve a full qualification over time. We are excited to play our part in creating more accessible, inclusive and life-changing opportunities through higher education

Applications for LLE-funded study will open from September 2026 for modules starting in January 2027.

As UCNL continues to expand its higher education offer, the introduction of LLE-funded provision marks an important step in creating more flexible, inclusive and accessible routes to higher-level skills and qualifications.
