Jim Phillips – MA, BDes(Hons), PGCE, SFHEA

HE Curriculum Lead: Teacher Training and the Humanities

Summary

With many years of experience teaching, running a department and mentoring PGCE trainees within the mainstream secondary sector (11-18), I joined DNCG as a HE lecturer in education based studies. Within HE I have programme led and lectured on a range of programmes including the NASENCO (formal SENCO qualification) and BA(Hons) Education Studies, before becoming Deputy Head of School and now Curriculum Leader for Teacher Training and the Humanities. I am delighted to lecture on our teacher training programmes.

About

My main research interests focus around curriculum development, creative learning and supporting children with Special Educational Needs and disabilities.

Teaching

I completed my degree in Illustration and progressed onto a PGCE (Secondary) teaching qualification. This led me into secondary school education, where I taught/ led departments for over 12 years. Throughout this time, I became a teacher training mentor within my settings and completed my MA studies. Over time, my professional perspective changed and I became more heavily involved with special educational provisions, developing knowledge and experience with relevant professionals, provision and policies. This led to me lecturing on a range of education programmes upon joining University Campus Doncaster, including developing and programme leading the SENCO qualification (NASENCO) and BA Education Studies courses.

Further Industry Experience

I am an external examiner for a range of programmes validated through the University of Hertfordshire and am a governor at a local special school.
