The programme aims to:
- Develop students who can assess, plan and implement care delivery and make sound
judgements about the effectiveness of the delivery
- Develop student’s personal and transferable skills including assessing and planning, problem solving and decision making, health promotion, interdisciplinary working, interpersonal skills and reflective practice
- Develop students’ principles of integrity and compassion to support best practice, effective communication and professionalism
- Enable students to understand the core principles of continuous professional development, whilst collecting and collating evidence to support this

The Certificate in Higher Education in Health and Social Care is a 1-year programme when studied on a full-time basis, which requires 6 hours of engagement in the classroom, one day per week.
Students will also be required to complete at minimum of 125, paid or voluntary work-place hours over the duration of the programme within the arena of Health and Social Care. Vocational hours provide real world relevance to student learning and are imperative to success on this programme.
The primary way of delivering this course is on campus. Students will receive 6 hours of teaching per week throughout this course. On campus teaching includes a combination of lectures, small group seminars, workshops, guest lectures and one to one discussion with your tutor. Additional one-to-one meetings with tutors will provide further support.
Throughout the degree, students will be assessed in several ways, including (but not limited to) written assignments, presentations, exams and practical assessments
Applicants must have any of the following: 32 UCAS points from two A Levels; level 3 BTEC National; an Access to HE Diploma or relevant real-world experience as per UCNL’s wider participation policy. It is desirable for students to have achieved GCSE grade C or above for English and Maths or Functional Skills. Prospective students wishing to enter a career in nursing will require GCSE grade C or above in English and Maths.
All prospective students will be required to have an interview with the Programme Leader or member of the academic team to ensure suitability before commencing on the course.
This course is particularly relevant to people already working in or looking to develop a career within health and social care. It is designed in a way that progressively prepares students for a career in a range of health settings and is underpinned by strong relations with a wide variety of community partners in fields such as community settings, residential care homes and the local NHS trust.
The programme provides a range of skills relevant across a variety of different professions. Students who successfully complete this course may progress to Pre-Registration programmes training or work in areas including health and social care services across a variety of settings.
If you wish to continue studying beyond this programme, it will provide you with a strong academic springboard from which to progress. Course progression routes could include progression to a pre-registration programmes such as Adult Nursing, Occupational Therapy, and Physiotherapy.
Students may also decide to progress into Year 2 of the FdSc Health and Social Care at UCNL

There may be some extra costs that you might need to make, or choose to pay, for example:
- Books (you’ll have access to books from your module reading lists in the HE library, but you may wish to buy your own copies)

- Trips and enhancement opportunities
- As the programme requires vocational hours within the Health and Social Care arena, you will be required to pay for an Enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service check if you are not in possession of a current one or registered on the update service.
- A Scrub Top is required for practical sessions at a cost of £20.
